Oops, they did it again...
So it turns out the allegations about the “Biden Crime Family” were manufactured by Vladimir Putin.
Court filings in the persecution, um, prosecution of Hunter Biden reveal the key “evidence” touted by Republicans came from a confidential FBI source, a snitch who works for Russian intelligence.
In the words of Donald Trump, Jr. “if it’s what you say, I love it.”
Meanwhile the elder Trump and his lackeys claim he’s the equivalent of Alexi Navalny, the subject of persecution at the hands of Joe Biden.
Let’slook at the evidence.
In a court document calling for the continued detention of Alexander Smirnov, special prosecutor David Weiss declared:
“During his custodial interview on February 14, Smirnov admitted that officials associated with Russian intelligence were involved in passing a story about Businessperson 1,” the prosecution memo states. Businessperson 1 is Hunter Biden, according to people familiar with the case who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss it.
It continued:
"The false information he provided was not trivial. It targeted the presumptive nominee of one of the two major political parties in the United States," Weiss wrote. "The effects of Smirnov’s false statements and fabricated information continue to be felt to this day."
Weiss, it should be recalled, is the US Attorney for Delaware, appointed by Trump and later named a special counsel by Attorney General Merrick Garland to look into a variety of allegations against Hunter Biden. The president’s son has been indicted in Delaware and California on federal firearms and tax violations respectively.
But perjury charges against Smirnov center on allegations contained in an FBI document that House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Hear, See, Speak No Evil, has said are central to the investigations by his committee and that of House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Performance Artist, into the “Biden Crime Family” dealings with Ukraine and China.
Jordan said the form was “the most important piece of corroborating evidence” the committees have in their impeachment investigation of President Joe Biden. But in an escape maneuver worthy of one-time collegiate wrestler and coach that he was, he declared when faced with the Weiss filing:
“It corroborates but it doesn’t change the fundamental facts,” which, he insisted to CNN’s Manu Raju, is that Biden was still involved in his son’s business dealings during his vice presidency.
Until Raju pulled a reverse and responded: “But it’s not true.”
Jordan might have been better off using Trump mouthpiece Kellyanne Conway’s insistence that there are “alternative facts.”
That leaves the Biden impeachment efforts on life support, even as Republicans gear up to depose Hunter and First Brother James Biden.
Meanwhile, back in Trump Fantasy land, the twice-impeached, four-times indicted, six-time bankrupt found civilly liable for fraud, sexual assault and defamation former POTUS is doing what he does best these days: play the victim card.
“It’s a form of Navalny,” Trump said a Fox News town hall on Tuesday, responding to a question from Laura Ingraham about the $355 million fine against his businesses after a New York civil trial. “It’s happening in our country too.”
“We are turning into a communist country in many ways,” Trump continued. “I got indicted four times, I have eight or nine trials. All because of the fact that I’m in, you know this, all because of the fact that I’m in politics. They indicted me.”
“Communist” has long been the Republican Party’s favorite scare word. Disgraced Wisconsin Senator Joseph R. McCarthy rode it into infamy, allegedly finding communists in the State Department, Hollywood and the Army. Most of his smears were baseless.
Meanwhile before he became Russian President for Life, Vladimir Putin was known as “comrade” and a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, while working as a high-ranking member of KGB, one of whose specialties was disinformation. Like meddling in the 2016 presidential election.
Trump’s grasp of history is as strong as his grasp of reality as he fails to avoid what could actually await him if convicted in any of the four indictments he faces in New York, Washington, Florida or Georgia.
It’s often known as Club Fed. And unlike the Arctic penal colony where Navalny lost his life, breathing is still allowed.
